Leylandii Cupressocyparis (Green and Gold)

Green Leylandii

These fast growing evergreen plants are ideal for making a quick effective hedge, windbreak or screen. They are also brilliant at reducing noise and pollution. Many of our customers have remarked that our Leylandii make a superb windbreak, whether in the garden or around the perimeter of a field with livestock or horses in it. They grow at around 3ft per year once established but can easily be trimmed into the height and width required. They are easy to keep under control with a trim once a year – the bad publicity comes from those who plant them and then don’t care for them. When cared for properly, Leylandii will make a very handsome hedge and we regard them as the best ‘all round’ hedging plants.

We are able to supply a range of sizes from as short as 2’6” and up to 20′. Most of these plants are in containers to make them easier to transport and to eliminate risks when transplanting. We have recently introduced a new collection into our catalogue which are root-control-bag Leylandii. These plants have the advantage of ground grown plants (bushiness) but when moved suffer very little, if any shock. Root-control-bag Leylandii are available in heights from 14’-20’ tall. The tall plants are also very bushy and provide an instant hedge. The Green Leylandii has pleasant green, dense foliage and grows between 2 and 3 feet a year.

Gold Leylandii

The main Gold Leylandii we grow is the Castlewellan Gold, though Robinsons Gold and Gold Rider are also plants we can source and supply.

The tallest that we grow the golden leylandii to is 8-9ft and you will need to check on availability as we do not always have them in stock.

Cupressocyparis leylandii ‘Castlewellan Gold’ is similar to Cupressocyparis leylandii, but with lovely yellow foliage. It does not grow quite as tall as the green Leylandii, but it tends to be a bushier plant. It is also highly suited to hedging and screening and can be trimmed to size. These plants give the advantage of not looking like an imense ‘green wall’ when planted and actually make quite a pretty hedge whilst still having all the impenetrability of a Green Leylandii Hedge.

Portugal Laurel (Prunus Lusitanica)

Portugal Laurel (Prunus Lusitanica) forms a lovely hedge with glossy dark green leaves tinged with red. The Portugal Laurels grow at a slightly slower rate than other Laurels they will put on up to 40cm per year. Portugal Laurel hedging grows well in free draining soil and shallow chalk. Box (Buxus Sempervirens)

Box (Buxus Sempervirens) is a slow growing hedging plant that is ideal for border hedging as they are very slow growing. Because of the very small leaves belonging to Box plants they make very good miniture hedges. If left unclipped, however, the plants will reach around 7 meters, after 40 years or so! These plants don’t mind either shade or full sunlight and will grow well in well drained soil. The annual rate of growth is up to 20cm per year. These are plants are also ideal candidates for topiary.

Western Red Cedar (Thuja)

Thuja Plicata(Western Red Cedar) is a conifer that grows up to 75 cm per year. It has soft green foliage and is ideal for creating an instant impact. Thuja will grow well in most well drained soils and grows fine in sun or shade. Thuja Plicata Atroviren is a variety of Thuja that has variagated foliage and so a prettier look than the plain Thuja Plicata. Yew (Taxus)

English Yew(Taxus Baccata) are the most traditional of hedging plants. We mainly stock English Yew but do have some stock of Irish Yew too (with a more yellow/golden foliage) contact us for more information. Yew like any well drained soil are are also happy by the sea and in shallow chalk. Yew will grow up to 50cm a year depending on conditions. We have rootballed Taxus from 3’, and supply sizes up to 10’ tall.Yew will make a very pleasing and tidy hedge when cared for instantly adding value to a new built. Yew also make lovely specimen plants and are very popular for topiary projects as they will fill out however you trim them. You will find the sizes that we have available below. Laurel (Prunus Laurocerasus)

Laurel (Prunus Laurocerasus ‘Rotundifolia’) is a very dense evergreen plant, with large, glossy green leaves. It grows happily in shade and puts up with dry sites. We supply these plants between 2′ and 8′ and most sizes we have in pots and rootballed. These will plants will make a very good hedge due to the fact that they are all bushy plants with multiple stems.

We grow a majority of these plants on our own 60 acres in Somerset then transport them back to our main site in Surrey. Because we grow these plants ourselves we are assured of their quality. You will be hard pressed to find Laurels grown in England that are as bushy or as competitively priced as these are.

Cupressocyparis Leylandii ‘Gold’

The main Gold Leylandii we grow is the Castlewellan Gold, though Robinsons Gold and Gold Rider are also plants we can source and supply. After many years of growing Gold Leylandii of different kinds, we have established a strain of Castlewellan Gold that has a pleasant golden colour, and a thick, bushy growth — we believe they are the best Gold Leylandii on the market.

The tallest that we grow the golden leylandii to is 9’-10’ (2.7- 3.0m) and you will need to check on availability as we do not always have them in stock at that height. More typically we have the 11L plants in the 5-8ft range.

Cupressocyparis Leylandii ‘Castlewellan Gold’ is similar to Cupressocyparis Leylandii Green, but with lovely golden/yellow foliage. The exact shade of the foliage varies slightly over the growing season. It does not grow quite as tall as the green Leylandii, but it tends to be a bushier plant, and is great for trimming into a thick and tight hedge. As with the Green Leylandii, it is highly suited to hedging and screening and can be trimmed to size. These plants give the advantage of not looking like an imense ‘green wall’ when planted and actually make quite a pretty hedge whilst still having all the impenetrability of a Green Leylandii Hedge.

Green Leylandii are a fast growing evergreen hedging plant with a pleasant foliage, ideal for an instant and effective hedge, windbreak or screen. With dense, bushy growth, they are brilliant at reducing noise and pollution.

They grow at around 3’ (90cm) per year once established but can easily be trimmed into the height and width required. They are easy to keep under control with a trim once a year – the bad publicity comes from those who plant them and then don’t care for them. When cared for properly, Leylandii will make a very handsome hedge and we regard them as the best ‘all round’ hedging plants.

We are able to supply a range of sizes from as short as 5’ (1.5m) and up to 20′ (6.1m). Most of these plants are in containers to make them easier to transport. This also eliminate risks when transplanting – it is not advisable to buy Leylandii as bare root plants.

It is not possible to grow Leylandii in pots above around 15’ (4.6m) high, so we have recently introduced a new collection into our catalogue: root-control-bag Leylandii. These plants have both the advantage of ground grown plants (ability to gain height, extra bushiness) but also the benefit of a pot grown plant in that when transplanted they suffer very little, if any shock. Root-control-bag Leylandii are available in heights from 14’-20’ (4.3- 6.1m) tall. For those who need a truly thick and instant hedge, these could be the way to go.
